I'm too indecisive, so I don't like to flatten layers, I just group them. Image (http://img530.imageshack.us/my.php?image=layersed8.png) this is what my layer pallet looks like for this icon (sorry for the ugly scribbles, but since it's a LIMS icon...)

The bottom merged group was my base (it looks like I did flatten it after all)
